By learning how to organise and represent information in a word problem as a simple diagram, your child will be able to effectively break down word problems systematically to make even complex problems easy to solve.

Description

We will introduce your child to the 2 basic models of part-whole and comparison models, and teach him or her to draw models to solve word problems involving the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Your child will also progress on to learn to draw 2 sets of comparison models to illustrate simply the changes taking place in the more complex word problems, and also learn how to construct before-and-after models to represent the increases or decreases pictorially. ​

  • Label and complete the parts of a part-whole model
  • Solve for the missing whole or part in a part-whole model
  • Label and complete the parts of a comparison model
  • Solve for the value of the longer bar in a comparison model

  • Draw models to represent more than/less than concepts
  • Add/subtract to find the missing part in a model

  • Draw models to represent sum/difference concepts
  • Apply the ‘RED – Remove, Extra, Divide’ technique to solve for the missing part in a model

  • Draw models to represent multiple or fractional (half, twice, thrice etc) concepts
  • Multiple/divide to find the missing part in a model

  • Apply the techniques from Module 1 to 4 to solve more complex word problems
