Ace IGCSE English With The Learning Lab’s Guide

With the IGCSE exams approaching, your child should be well into preparations for his or her papers. While practice does make perfect, it is important that your child is practising the right exam techniques that will help secure the grades he or she is aiming for.

Pointers For Peak Performance In IGCSE English

Paper 1: Reading

1. Comprehension and summary task (30 marks)
Students should source out explicit and implicit answers in text A and note which phrases they need to paraphrase. For the summary task, students must read text B and identify at least 10 content points in the passage, which should then be paraphrased in continuous writing.

2. Short-answer questions and language task (25 marks)
Students should source out explicit and implicit answers in text C and understand how the writer achieves certain effects and influences readers through his use of literary devices.

3. Extended response to reading (25 marks)
After reading Text C carefully, students should write a response in one of the following text types: letter, report, journal, speech, interview and article. Up to 15 marks will be awarded for the content points and an additional 10 marks for the quality of the writing (style and structure, range of vocabulary, accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar).

Paper 2: Directed Writing and Composition (80 marks)

1. Directed Writing (40 marks)
Students should use, develop and evaluate information in the text(s) to create a discursive/argumentative/persuasive letter, speech or article. Up to 15 marks are available for the content, and up to 25 marks for the quality of the writing (style and structure, range of vocabulary, accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar).

2. Composition (40 marks)
When picking a question from a choice of four titles: two descriptive and two narrative, students should choose one they have more confidence in and spend around 10 minutes planning their essay before writing it. Up to 16 marks are available for the content and structure, and up to 24 marks for the style and accuracy of the writing.
